All I had to do was set the 'bootable' flag on the Windows 7 partition, and the update installed correctly on the next boot into Windows. One laptop is 64-bit and has both a 100 MB Windows system (sda1) partition, and a 50 GB Windows C drive (sda2). PS: you can verify if the failure is being caused by a permissions issue by examining the CBS.log (C:\Windows\Logs\CBS) I have fallowed your instructions, but installation still failed. This means that I can bypass GRUB2 and boot directly into my Windows 7 install just by unplugging the Xubuntu drive, or selecting it in my BIOS's boot menu.
